ATV SAFTEY
Like the motto says "A good boy scout is always ready." Preparing to ride is one of the most important aspects to riding safely. Being prepared also brings with it the peace of mind that you can handle almost any situation. Below is some important information to help get you started. For more information on ATV safety follow the links provided and please use good judgment. RULES TO LIVE BY 1. Never show off. 2. Wear proper gear. Helmet/Boots/Gloves/Pads/Protective Clothing 3. Do not drink and drive. 4. Do not use drugs and drive. 5. Maintain a high level of alertness. 6. Never ride above your own skill level. 7. Do a complete Pre-Ride Inspection. 8. Slow down in unfamiliar terrain. 9. Never ride alone. 10. Take an approved training course. 11. Never operate an ATV on public roads. 12. Do not allow extra riders on your ATV. 13. Ride only ATV'S appropriate for your age group. 14. Always be alert for other riders. PRE-RIDE INSPECTION Nothing is more embarrassing than breaking down on the trail. Man your buddies cut into you like a hot knife going through butter. And then you realize that this might have been avoided by a simple Pre-Ride Inspection. Although nothing can prevent mechanical break downs, there is much you can do to help avoid this situation. Below are a few tips and some helpful links for completing a Pre-Ride Inspection. RULES TO RIDE BY 1. Clean and remove any built up debris. Mud/ Sand/ Ice and Snow 2. Check the condition and pressure of all four tires. 3. Top off fluid levels. Fuel/ Oil/ Coolant 4. Check your braking systems. Brake fluid level/ Cable movement/ Pad ware. 5. Check your Throttle Cable for ease of movement. 6. Check all of your indicator lights. Headlight/Taillight/Brakelight 7. Air Filter-Check and clean as recommended. 8. Check your Steering for any unusual looseness or movement. 9. Check Lug nuts and Axle nuts for tightness. Be sure that all carter pins are in place. 10. Check the Engine Kill Switch for proper function. 11. Examine the condition and slack of your Drive Chain or Belt. 12. Inspect and tighten any loose nuts and bolts. 13. Visually inspect for any damaged components. 14. Check both front and rear shocks. 15. Take your ATV to your dealer at least once a year for a complete maintenance check. Remember this my seem like to much, but the few minutes you invest here will save you hours in the long run. PROTECTIVE CLOTHING Oddly enough Protective Clothing seems to be one of the most over looked safety items. I’ve seen riders show up to ride wearing only shorts and sandals. And then try to keep up with other riders wearing full body armor. Protective Clothing is more than just a safety issue, it’s a comfort issue as well. How many times have you heard that story of that guy or gal who got wet and when the sun went down they got cold. In order to enjoy the great outdoors you have to dress for the ever changing weather. Protective Clothing is worth the investment! How much is a Helmet worth compared to the cost of the trip to the hospital. Think about it, always wear Protective Clothing it pays. RULES TO DRESS BY 1. Always wear a SNELL or DOT approved helmet. 2. Always wear Boots. Motocross or Work boots. Full over the calf motocross boots offer the most protection. 3. Always wear EYE protection. Sunglasses are not goggles. Goggles will protect your eyes properly. 4. Gloves provide protection from abrasions and help to keep your hands from getting sore, tired or cold. 5. A long sleeved shirt will help to reduce abrasions and scratches to your arms. 6. Pants should be made of a tough material and completely cover the legs. 7. Shoulder, knee and elbow pads will provide extra protection in case of a fall. 8. A kidney belt can be worn for lower back support and extra protection of the lower torso. 9. Always carry extra clothing in the event that you get wet or the temperature drops. 10. Always carry rain gear. Mud pants and Rain jackets will help to keep you warm and dry.
